A new trend is emerging and the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean has become even riskier. Smugglers are reportedly abusing migrants — trading them in slave markets. Survivors tell stories of forced labour and sexual exploitation. One Gambian man freed by the International Organisation for Migration recounts his experience.

Slavery in Libya was abolished in 1857; before, eg, the United States of America, or the Dutch colonial empire abolished it. However, NATO’s 2011 ‘humanitarian’ war on Libya brought it back.
