A Think tank says Child Benefit could end up being abolished and incorporated into Universal Credit instead
Universal Credit was designed to replace six existing benefits – but could soon be expanded to take over from Child Benefit too. That’s the claim of researchers in a shock new report.
The controversial new Universal Credit system was designed as single payment substitute for the following six ‘legacy benefits’:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Housing Benefit
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit
But the value of Child Benefit has fallen to such a low that it could end up being scrapped and absorbed into Universal Credit as well. It would probably mean that UC payments would be altered to include an amount equivalent to what was previously paid out in Child Benefit.
